Okay, so yeah, I’m a cynic. Especially when it comes to “love” and all that crap. And I’m not talkin’ ’bout none of that true Love, the Love that comes from having the heart of Christ (read previous note). I’m talkin’ ’bout…(da da..da da….evil theme music from Jaws)…”The Crush.” That’s right. Down to the nitty-gritty…the hard-hitters…the piece di resistance…the coup de la tragedi.
So, unlike what some people have said to me, or think (or think they believe but probably know otherwise), my opinion of “the crush” is that you CAN’T HELP IT.
I know, it sounds like I’m pawning off an embarrassing feeling on human weakness, but really, YOU CAN’T HELP IT. Not if it’s a real crush. And what is a “crush”, you ask? It’s that inevitable feeling, the feeling that you will “fawn and beg to be her fool, and her your fate.” (Shakespeare) You become “romantically attracted” to the other sex…you have “deep, heartfelt feelings for her”…you are “falling into a pit of happiness.” Yeah yeah. All good while you’re asleep. Don’t you know what happens afterwards?
You get stuck. You’ve fallen…and you can’t get up. So now your crush is over. History. Done for. Hasta la vista. Byebye, sweetheart. You know what? You’ve left a part of your heart in them. It’s something you can’t help, something you can’t control, and yet…you feel like you’ve lost your virginity over a feeling. How depressing.
Here’s where I get cynical. If “love” is a feeling you can’t help, how do you get over it? How do you climb that hill and get out of that swamp, and keep all your limbs on as well? Is it possible?
So how do we stay safe? (I’m speaking for the guys…well, maybe just for me…I don’t know how anyone else feels.) Can we escape it? Can we elude Crush’s long, snaky fingers and stay mentally and spiritually pure? Well, I’m trying. (Can’t you tell?) After my first, (and thankfully only…praise God) crush, I am running from girls all over the place. I’m doing my best, and so far, they all stay away…for the most part. But hey, maybe the hermit life isn’t for you. Just beware…don’t fall in without a fight, or you might never leave that rock-hard place coated in sugar and candy, just waiting to trap you forever and eternity.
