Fair Warning

A weakened heart and spoiled faith
Have hardened now to bitten stone.
Each selfish art has turned to chafe
And ruin brow of stitch’d own.

Content to gaze on wretched plot
And savor what foul minds have known
He stayed his pace, and soon forgot
What favors friendship, kind, had sown.

These memories, so quick to fail
Would downfall bring, to dean and drone.
Unheard of, peace could not prevail
And Love lies scattered, windswept, blown.

Too often, tailored chance descends
Tempting, lest some fool condone
Heed not these wayward, smiling friends
‘Ere you face your fears alone.
