The Impossible Dream

The impossible dream I had last night
Left me standing in a room.
I looked to the left and the right
But I couldn’t see past the gloom.
And suddenly, out of the darkness, a light
That brightened the atmosphere and gave me sight.

As I looked closer, I perceived
A living heart, and a blue vein
The vibration of its deepening beat
Was like thunder before a rain.
And the thought that I conceived
Sent spinal shivers to my feet.

It spoke to me, then, quiet and grim
“You’ve lost your way again.
And passing by the inner rim
Forsaken every friend.”
I realized, then, how hurt beat thin
The linings of the hearts within.

A sweating, hard-earned victory
Was nothing anymore;
It fills with heat, and leaves empty
The stuff that makes a soul.
To burn with fire, eternally,
I must first burn my earthly me.

I woke up, then, in cooling sweat
And sighed in vain comfort fleet
Forgotten then, but now, instead
Familiar in conceit.
I groan in knowledge I beget
And weep for truth I left unsaid.
