In darkness, a deep and insufferable thing
Lies hid in each ditch, hole, and glen.
In silence, it watches, and pounces on you
Feasting again and again.
The essence of power, the hunger for greed
The wish to be greater than men;
Consuming, conniving, continuing to
Eat your heart again and again.
In ignorance, souls with no proper defense
Tread blindly into the beast’s den
Temptation is costly, but realized too late
As it kills you again and again.
Yet, a light from the hilltops is shone every day
To bring back missed and mistaken
But some will ignore, and continue in night
Pass the beacon again and again.
Will you be stricken? Have you been freed?
Are you guarded from tempters within?
Or did you fall prey to the well-traveled path
And get lost in the darkness again?
