Calamity

O great Love! This world is deep
And how much deeper is my love!
Through tribulation, we are stronger
And through our strength and admiration
Hurricanes will fall and break
Against us, no great force prevails
In endless joy we stand victorious!

O my Love! How darkness gathers
Behold the height of rising waves!
See the storm-clouds spiral endless
And the waters, foaming white
Our love will hold; fear not our walls!
How mighty are the forces op’osed
But see now, mightier thou, and I!

O wind-swept love! Your tangled hair
And fearful eyes have stricken me!
Your hope is leaking as typhoons
And tidal waves crash down to earth
Hold tight my hand, my arm, my love
Hold thy breath, as one we rise
To break upon the water’s surface.

O drowning love! Why have you left?
Where did you dive, so I might follow!
Let me close, don’t swim away
My love, your life is worth a chance
Do not let fear take hold of you
Let not leviathan see you thus
At once he grabs, and grips you fast.

O lost love! This sea is deep
And at the bottom is my love!
We challenged nature, in our blindness
Weakened by our pride and youth
Hurry, darkness! Hasten, dusk!
I long for chilled rest, treading thus
With weakened arms, and bitter sadness.
