After talking to my wise and knowledgeable friend, he convinced me to rethink our plan to drive to California with a loaded U-Haul and a car hitch dragging my Elantra behind.
Initially, we had expected to give away most of our furniture and only take our wonderful queen-sized bed and the antique bedroom dressers Hannah likes. Every piece of wooden furniture in our apartment was purchased off Craigslist in Maryland for a total of $300, so besides being easily replaceable, we can make some profit on the resales.
The only issue with our initial plan was the cost of hauling our crap across the country would be nearly twice as much as just starting over on the LA Craigslist. Simple math and approximations confirmed, and now I feel a joyful man. While we would still be driving separately, Hannah and I will only be driving our own cars, loaded with our own stuff, in a much more cost-effective and energy-efficient way, and arrive in California with new lives and nothing to show for our old ones except some clothes and my TV.
I’m not leaving without my TV. It has built-in 3D features. That crap’s expensive.
In case anyone’s wondering, I’ll be buying our new mattress from Casper, and looking forward to trying out a memory foam bed. Apparently they have a man who delivers them on a bicycle. I would like to witness this.
